Hammered Copper Earrings
Small copper ovals, hammered for texture and curved for dimension. On sterling silver hooks (or gold filled).
Natural, uncoated copper will darken to a beautiful natural metallic brown. You can let them take on their rich natural coloring, or you can clean them to keep them bright shiny copper. (Copper doesn't usually turn green unless you spend a lot of time wearing them out in the rain or in the shower.)
A note on polyurethane and acrylic coatings: We don't coat our copper with a polyurethane coating, as many companies do. We have two reasons for that. The first is that we like the natural patina copper takes on, it's beautiful and rich and genuine. The second reason is there's no coating that will last long enough on jewelry. A poly coat is fine for wall art that won't be touched, but earrings are touched and worn and dropped and tossed onto the counter and worn next to wet hair, and exposed to perfumes and hair products and sunblock, etc. When a tiny scratch forms in the poly coating, tarnish will creep underneath and leave dirty speckles which you can't clean not without taking off the whole poly coating. We have tested a variety of protectants, all highly recommended by other jewelers, copper artists, coating companies, jewelry supply companies, customers, and others. None hold up.
